CHALLENGE FACED BY CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHP TODAY

(Num 21: 4-9; LK14: 25-27; Heb 12:1-4)

During Jesus' earthly ministry, and during the days of the early church, the term that was used most frequently to designate the Jesus' followers was "disciple". The term ‘disciple’ derives from the Greek word Mathetes, which appears 262 times in the NT. Therefore, discipleship becomes the central theological theme of the Gospels and Acts in particular.

As it is held by some commentators that, the roots of biblical discipleship go deep into the fertile soil of God's calling. That calling is expressed in the pattern of Divine initiative and human response that constitutes the heart of the biblical concept of covenant, manifested in the recurrent promise.

Therefore, God has called his people to represent him on the earth, to be with him in every circumstance of life, to be transformed in personal character to be like him. And that calling is at the heart of biblical discipleship, both in the Old and New Testaments.

However, as we recollect biblical understanding of disciple/discipleship, let us move little further to the concept of the term, so that this recollection will be a great help and instrumental for our self-retrospection;
The concept and understanding of the term ‘disciple’ can be given in diverse ways, for eg;

1.    Billy Graham - A disciple is simply someone who believes in Jesus and seeks to follow him in his/her daily life. Originally, of course, a disciple was someone who literally knew Jesus in the flesh and followed him — but after he was taken up into heaven, anyone who was committed to Jesus was called a disciple.

From here, we may highlight ‘points of interest’ that Billy Graham has made; according to him, disciple means;-
-    Someone who believes in Jesus

-    Who follow him in his/her daily life

-    Who literally knew Jesus in the flesh and followed him

-    Anyone who was committed to Jesus.

2.    Apart from these explanations; we also can draw a clear picture of disciple or the concept of discipleship by making reflection from the life and works of the 12 disciples and from the relationship being established between Jesus and his 12 disciples;

i)    When the disciples had received a call from their master, Jesus; they were willing to leave everything including their comfort zone.

ii)    Disciples were always at the feet of Jesus. They were very much close to Him. It was in fact; the Jesus movement was incomplete without the presence of even a single member of disciples.

iii)    They always keen to offer themselves to listen, to obey and to serve their master.

iv)    Although two or three ‘betrayal episodes’ are found from the inner circle, one of the profound remarks we can see from them is – disciples were very much interest in the life and teachings of Jesus.

v)    They are not perfect, but in spite of all their weaknesses, their lives were totally controlled by Jesus and his words. It seems, they did not have any other force except self-centredness that ruled over them.

I believed, these few points are quite enough to remind us the true essence of Jesus’ disciple/discipleship. It is also appropriate to make use of self-re-examination. It is, in fact, these understandings of the concept of disciple/discipleship mentioned are to be considered as the qualities and natures that are to be found in every individual Christian life or the quality one must possess or hold on.

But despite of the fact that, the story left behind by many Christian today, which is not interesting at all, because of diverse challenges face by todays’ Christian is – this concept and true nature of disciple/discipleship is gradually fading away from individual Christian life who are expected to exemplify and to demonstrate through their life.

Therefore, as suggested by many, it is essentially necessary to identify the challenges pose by various forces in today's’ world; in order that the consciousness, realization, and awareness of these challenges may help and tell us to find a solution, how to deal with and how to give an appropriate response to these challenges;

1.    Imprisonment of the will under the ‘self’
One of the great menaces which is often overlooked by many Christians today, that at the same time, can captivate the individual person, as a result; is ‘imprisonment of individuals’ will’ under the self, which is a little bit different from self-imprisonment.

The ‘self’ however, is the place where we get qualities like – knowledge, love, intimacy, and all other good qualities. It is also a place where the feeling of transgression, hatred, envy, slander and all other bad qualities come into existence. Since it has been diluted and polluted by the power of sin, the self in human becomes the source of evil doings. Therefore, it requires precaution before it spring up and totally control the spiritual realm of the individual. I believe, this is one of the reasons why Jesus said in Mark 8:34 - Whosoever would come after me must deny him/herself.

Although, it is considered as one of the most important qualities that makes a person – a person; it is also one of the sources that brings obstacle, and many more complications on individual human life. For me, it is one of the greatest enemies of individual spirituality which is found within us, and again that often brings inhibition for our spiritual well-being.

Since, the ‘self is the core canter of the mechanism where all individual decisions are made, if the ‘self’ in human is not given proper consideration, it will soon become the best adversary for such a particular person, because it soon be imprisoned individual person including his/her free will under its subjugation. Then, as a consequence, the individual will have so many drawbacks or backsliding behaviours in his/her life.

Then, a person who undergoes draw back situation can never win another soul. As long as a person is under the slave of a polluted self, he/she can never help a person who is in spiritual thirst/problem.
Therefore, in order to win more souls and to get conquest in our spiritual warfare, as we confront the power of darkness; one must win the self and must free from the power of the self; he/she must get rid of this kind of deceiving force of the self.

2.    Time management
Time management is another challenge of discipleship today for it adversely affects our way of life including spiritual life of every individual.

Due to drastic changes and development that have come up today, especially in the field of information communication, new media have come up along with various sophisticated technologies.  As all know, this development has a far reaching impact on almost every individual life. The most common complaint against technology and its related stuffs is that they are time-sinks that affect productivity and quality of life. It affected our lifestyle, our behaviour, our value system, outlook/attitude, etc. and simultaneously it also has affected and influenced our time management as well.

In addition, as media have captured almost all our valuable and leisure times, we are now in controlled by the power of media. Since the power and effect of media is so strong, our entire ways of life, including our time management have become under the pursuant of media influence.

Statista.com estimated that there are 250 million active social media users in India alone in 2018. And the average time spent by the users is 2-3 hour/day. But for us, the number is probably more than that. Perhaps, it may cross 3 for some, and sometimes 4 -5 hours in a day for some. However the same source says, “Low self-control is a major key in the overuse of technology and the reason why excessive engagement is made by many people”.

We are not against the usefulness of technology or any other media. I rather hold the opinion that, it is helpful for our academic purpose and for other related official works. But since time management is very important for our success in the ministry of God as well as for individual spiritual upbringing; and moreover, since poor time management can in turn affect not only individual spiritual life, but also the academic performance of every individual; a person who is going to be involved in ‘the God’s Oikos management’ must take a deep concern on it.

Lastly, for those who undergo this kind of problem; a person who are struggling with the forces of ‘the self within’ and the problem of time management for the improvement of individual spiritual growth; I would like to make only two simple suggestions that are to be considered as ‘a way out’ for every individual who is unable to remain still due to the thirst for their spiritual upbringing.

1.    As found in the letter to the Hebrews: ‘Looking unto Jesus’ is one of the best answers and the way out of our spiritual struggle. By simply looking at Him, we can get victory over our spiritual warfare.

Though Jesus has all the answers to our problems, we sometimes do not realize his sovereignty, his love and mercy; who cares for us and who has all the answers for our tussles. By simply looking at Him, we are being promised; spiritual restoration, renewal, and revitalization as found from Num 21:3ff which says, in v 8 & 9 -   The LORD said to Moses, “Make a poisonous serpent, and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live.” So Moses made a serpent of bronze, and put it upon a pole; and whenever a serpent bit someone, that person would look at the serpent of bronze and live. This is only a figurative of Christ’s salvific act on the cross, for those who want to look unto Him and get healed.

2.    LK 14:27 says, whoever does not carry his own cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. This particular verse has various meanings for e.g.;

-    The true followers of Christ must at once build and fight, and therefore be ready and prepared to endure all types of miseries.

-    ‘Own cross’ may signify whatever is trying and disagreeable to flesh and blood.

-    Jesus carried his cross to be crucified the sinful flesh; therefore this will indicate that cross is meant not only for pain or suffering but for dying. Likewise, our own cross is to let crucify and to let it die, desire of individual self-i.e. the self within or the self which is found within us.

However, in contrast to this understanding; those who are under the slave of the ‘self’ do not carry at all their own cross. Therefore willingness to bear or to carry one’s own cross is the easiest way to defeat the self. Even if the world philosophy holds the maxim which says – ‘life for the self’; in contrary, the word of God says – ‘die to self and live for Christ’

This is how we shall have a fullness of life in Christ; a life that is constantly ready to overcome the power and different forces of the darkness.

CONFIDENCE

                                                                 (Sam 118: 8 & 9)

One of the greatest mistakes that has often been committed by people today is – many Christians, including ministers in the church, put more confident in mortals/ worldly things than God.

Therefore, by having realized the present condition on normal Christian life today, i chose this key word from the above two verses (8&9) “CONFIDENCE” as the main theme for this  meditation.

In this Psalm 118: V. 8 & 9 – the term ‘confidence’ is compared with the term ‘trust’ (KJB, NRSV, CEV) or ‘refuge’ (NIV, ESV, NLT) or ‘shelter’ (ISV & NET bible) by mentioning – it is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in mortals.

Although the emphasize made by the psalmist is – to take refuse, or to take shelter or to trust in the Lord; the very term which i called it as secondary keyword ‘Confidence’ is going to be our main focus as mentioned earlier. In the meantime, one thing we should not fail to acknowledge is - the scripture does not tell us that - ‘to put confidence in mortals is wrong’; rather it has been clearly mentioned as – "It is better to trust in the Lord, than to put confidence in mortals."

However, before we come to the main section where we suppose to make (our) emphasize, i just want to highlight the background of this entire section of psalm 118.

This Psalm 118 is one of the most popular psalms of the Psalter for Jews and Christians.

Martin Luther, for example, considered it as his favorite psalm.
He wrote:

   “This psalm is one of the psalms that I loved… for it has often served me well, and has helped me    out of grave troubles, when neither - emperor, kings, wise men, clever men, nor saints, etc. could have helped me.”

It is a song of thanksgiving by an individual who was delivered from his enemies.

And as remarks given by some commentators -

Psalm 118 had a very important role during the Feast of Tabernacles and the Passover Feast. So, at Passover it was sung, together with Psalms 115-117.

And as a result of the interchange of various voices in Psalm 118 and the shifts of address, the compositional structure of this liturgical psalm is very complex.

-    The chapter begins with an opening call to give thanks in verses 1-4.

-    It continues with the king’s personal testimony of his rescue from a vicious attack by internal enemies (vv. 5-18)

-    Then, a “script” for thanks giving processional (vv. 19-28).

-    And lastly, the psalm concludes in verse 29 with the same call to praise as verse 1, thereby enclosing the poem as a whole.

Therefore, coming to the term ‘confidence’…the meaning and root word is pepoithesis from peitho i.e – to persuade which means – full persuasion and expresses a belief in someone or something to point of placing one’s trust or reliance in it/them. It is also a belief that one can rely on someone or something.

Confidence is also internal factor and force that gives us strength and power, boldness, ability or aptitude, enthusiasm, determination and many more to do something and to help us move and grow in all directions. It is also the quality that every individual needs to have to get success in life.

However, my points of interest, what I would like to mention from these two selected texts are;

There are;
-    Men of full of confident by birth.

-    There are also people who built up their confidence in and through various sources;

For example;
-    Ladies belonging to NE states, whoever may be even from N or S India, but not all, (no offense) likely to feel more confident when they could cover up their body with the latest fashions (?). That means – our confidence depends on the new and latest fashion/beautiful dresses that we considered it as best suited for us.

-    Likewise, there are many people who put their confidence and at the same time people who build up their confidence in and through various sources.

One of the main reasons and purposes of theological education that we have been taken up in and through various theological institutions is to equip students (our young people) to become effective witnesses in their diversified Christian vocations. To put in another words – it is to build up and equip our students in order to become more confident.

As mentioned earlier, this is one of the objectives of theological education in every theological institution especially an institution under Senate of Serampore College.

It is also my believed and as I have come a crossed, that when our students graduate from the college, most of them/you could get more confidence, perhaps and hopefully some of them/you might have gone little further to acquire over confident too.

To some extent, another thing that i would like to add more is – many theologians too including an ordained ministers, pastors, priests, bishops  have committed the same mistake; i.e we, many theological graduates who have committed ourselves to the service of God have often put more confidence in our education, in our degrees believing that getting more higher education and degree is the main foundation that enable a person to serve God in the ministry of God, in this postmodern context where we live in which is also constituted mostly by highly educated people.

I do not oppose/against it to have more higher education and have more knowledge or wisdom to have confidence, etc. I rather prefer to say that – there is nothing wrong to have self-confidence, and of course, we must build up more confidence to get success in life. But building up our confidence in and through earthly things forgetting/ignoring/overlooking about the imperativeness of the Holy Spirit in our personal life is one of the greatest mistakes we often have committed.

In addition to what have been mentioned, another few more points i just want to add more are;

-    There are people who tend to build up their confidence in money and wealth.

-    There are also people who are trying to get their self-satisfaction/confidence in their physical appearance, hair style, make up, etc.

-    There are also people who put their confidence in their position, status, grade, etc.

-    There are also people who put their confidence in place or geographical location where they belonged and from where they have come from…

-    There are also people who put their confidence in their belongings; like too expensive electrical gadget (eg: smart phone), branded shoes and cloths, expensive ornaments, etc

As mentioned earlier, we all have freedom to look for it in and through which we may build up confidence.

But, let us not overlook anymore the vital role play by the Holy Spirit in our personal life, as well as in our ministry. Holy Spirit is the basic source and foundation where we found and get all our spiritual needs and it is also the right foundation from where we ought to build up our confidence for the ministry of God.

Lastly, to edify and to equip ourselves in building up our confidence for the service of God, let us draw ourselves near to God. Let us not forget to consider about the relationship we have between God and us.

The more you absorbed yourselves to God, the more confident you are.

The more you come closer to God, the more confidence you will get in Him.

This is what and how we need to reconsider about our confidence for the service of, and for the kingdom of God.

Be confident,
Have confidence in you,
Built up your confidence in things,
But most of all in God.

PUT YOUR SANDAL OFF

Prayer    : A high standard of principality, Confidence, even eloquence is not enough to instill your holy words in the minds of your people. It is not adequate neither correctness nor perfectness to achieve transcendental satisfaction. Your Holy Spirit alone which is the source of our nourishment that searched all things, even the deep things, is the one we need at this very moment. Thank you so much Lord for your mercy and for your unfailing promise that comes true through the gift of your Holy Spirit. Thank you so much for your presence among us.
As we meditate upon your holy words, may the words of my mouth and the meditation of our hearts be acceptable in thy side; O Lord our rock and redeemer. AMEN!
__________________________________

The chosen text for our meditation is taken from Exo 3: 1-10. In this text we found - the encounter between God and Moses, the burning bush, and the call received by Moses, etc.
Therefore, basing on the theme – “PUT YOUR SANDAL OFF” we will contemplate God’s purpose in our life and how to give an appropriate response to it (that purpose).

So, as we proceed on, let me highlight the account of an event (Exo 3:1ff) through which we can make significant reflections in a more meaningful  way:

In this particular text, we can see;
-    Moses, who fled far away to the land of Median from Egypt, was keeping the flock of his father-in-law Jethro.

-    Then when he came to Horeb, the mountain of God; there the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the bush.

-    And as having seen the burning bush, he realized that the bush was blazing, yet it was not consumed.

-    So he decided to turn aside and look at this burning bush; and then little later, he received the call of God out of the burning bush.

-    And the voice he received says, “Come no closer, remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground”

This are some of the points how we can recollect the summary of an event found in Exo 3:1ff

When God called Moses from the burning bush, the first thing God told him was, “Take your sandals off.” And the same has happened after some 40 years later when God appeared to Joshua, As the Israelite besieged Jericho, God said to Joshua, “Take your sandal off your foot” (Joshua 5:15).

However, these two accounts have resulted two important questions to be asked that may further require appropriate answer –
1)    What was God’s purpose in this incident?
2)    Why would God tell Moses to take off his sandals?

The first answer we can give, as mentioned in the same text is – The place on which Moses was standing is a holy ground. We may further say that – the ground becomes holy only because it has become the presence of God.

And in addition, another appropriate answer we may give is –
When people were to approach God, they must approach Him with solemnity and humility. Taking off sandals expressed an inward reverence through an outward behavior.

Some Eastern religions today, including south Indian tradition still require bare feet when entering their temples or worshiping places. Likewise, in ancient Greeks, the worship of Diana and Jupiter required worshipers to take off their shoes. And a common custom in the Orient and in many parts of India and North America is to take off their shoes when entering a person’s home.

Therefore, when Moses received a profound calling from God, he has to do something before God as being instructed – a sign of reverence and respect; a token of submission, obedience, and humility, etc.

This sign, in response to God’s call is extremely important because;
As found from the following verses –

-    God had observed the misery of his people who are in Egypt.

-    And he heard their cry on account of their taskmasters and their sufferings.

-    Moreover, God has a greater deliberate purpose for his people i.e., to deliver them from the Egyptians, out of the bondage and from their sufferings and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey.

-    And in addition, we also can recollect how God revealed himself to Moses – who he was, how powerful he was, how he has done something mightily, etc.

If Moses does not willing to do as to what God has given an authoritative instruction; all these things – God’s Purpose in him as well as God’s purpose for the people of Israel may not be made known to Moses and at the same time, may not be taken place. Even more, Moses could never become God’s useful instrument to deliver the people of Israel. And he neither would not receive nor has experience God extended revelation in his life.

Just before we move on to the next section, I would like to share with you my personal experience that I have come across during the year 2014 that may illustrate what has been mentioned.

When I joint this college in the year 2013; during the first 3 years, i was given 6 more subjects which were totally new for me apart from 2 communication subjects which I considered as mandatory for a communication teacher. So, all together I had been taken up 8 subjects until 2016. However, in spite of all my weaknesses I have decided to take up whatever responsibilities given to me. So, as this decision compels me to offer more time, more deliberation, hard working with sincerity; I was working very hard to manage myself and to get the things done.

But when I spent maximum 8 hours per day by keeping myself remain seated on a chair, preparing for my new subjects; as a result of this heavy work load, my ‘piles problem’ which i had in the past 3 years has out again. Since my teaching load did not permit me to stop from my regular work, then my problem becomes worsens, and in addition we also found that there was tumour developed inside it. So, after so many consultations, my doctor advised me to go for surgery.

Therefore, (in short) I was admitted in CMRI Hospital, Kolkata. Then the day when I was pushed in inside the surgical room; the first instruction i received from the nurse presented there was – to remove my dress. So, I removed it as being instructed. Then again, the nurse said to me, saying – “Remove your underwear too”. You know what the thing will appear before two or three persons presented in a room, if I remove my underwear. Something which may look ugly or may look good will surely be appeared without any cover!

This is something I don’t like, and one of the reasons why I do not want to undergo any surgery. It is not easy to expose what we do not want to expose in public. For a moment, a strong hesitation has stopped me; because it was not easy to stand still naked in front of people whom I never talk with. But if I want to become free from my problem; I have to follow whatever advice and instruction they have given to me. So, I removed my underwear and stand naked before them. This is mandatory not only for me, but for all, who supposed to undergo this kind of surgery.

Although I did not receive the total healing or removal of my problem till now; putting apart and hanging on my two legs, totally naked before the three doctors during incision or the operation was something I have gone through during this process. I have gone through only because I want to get healed; I was willing to do what I never ever expected to do before because I know that this difficult decision will give me a relieve from my problem.

This may or may not illustrate well enough the reason why God tells Moses to take off his sandals. But I am sure; it will help us to understand – the purpose of taking off sandals and the messages behind.

According to my own understanding and as I believed - After Moses bare feet hit the ground, his life would never be the same again.

This was how God called Moses into his ministry. God had been working with Moses and after this barefooted moment; Moses becomes the greatest leader in the Old Testament. Until Jesus came, no one arose in Israel to match Moses. God used Moses to bring Israel to himself. He led the children of Israel out of Egyptian slavery and through the 40 years of wilderness wanderings to the boarder of the promised land of Canaan. He also received from God all the laws that would govern them until Jesus came. And moreover, God has made his covenantal relationship with Israel through Moses. In short, his entire ministry all began as he stood barefooted before the Lord on that ground.

How important - submission, willingness, and obedience are ….
-    Submission for the almighty and to his sovereignty to rule over us in all our walk of lives.
-    Willingness to his plans and purposes.
-    Obedience to all his commands, even at the cost of suffering and pain.

Sometimes we often create a comfortable environment for ourselves where we separate ourselves from the things of God and are shielded from the sharp points of pain and suffering around us forgetting about the desire or plan what God has in us.

Sometimes we also expected God’s intervention in our life, in our ministry, in our academic life, etc. forgetting about a token of action what we ought to do.

As time pass, a time may also fall on us when we are asked and when we need to — keep silence, to bend a little more down, when we need to put a little more step, when we need to render little more extra time and even more sacrifice; etc. to make peace, to bring more comfortable and healthy environment, to get relief or to provide healing for others, to bring salvation for people around us, to put into a right direction which is not right, to walk with God, and to be filled with the Holly Spirit, etc. Needless to say is — all these required a token of action – i.e. willingness to put off our sandals. Our sandals that protect us, that cover us from various harms; and the sandal that make us proud, that makes us free from shame and dishonor, a sandal of self-centeredness, a sandal of pride, a sandal of self-promotion, a sandal of hypocrisy, etc.

Therefore, if we're supposed to move forward to a far reaching in the Lord’s vineyard, and if we are going to submerge ourselves to a grater extend to be a sign, symbol and instrument of the kingdom of God here on earth and for other God’s creations… obedience, submission to the will of God; willingness to put off our sandals is something that can bring us to a right direction.

A very simple thing, yet which required humility to make us empty, to put us little down; and to make us naked is something that often creates impediments and obstruction in our spiritual journey, and to do a great things for God and to establish the kingdom of God here on earth.

Put your sandals off … so that God will work in you, he also will show you something great for your friends, for your family, for your community and lastly, for his glory.
